About Suzanne James
A lifelong supporter of Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) I became involved in advocacy whilst researching an article in 2021 about the NSW VAD debate. Dying With Dignity NSW (DWD NSW) then Vice President and spokesperson Shayne Higson had lost her beloved Mum to brain cancer a decade earlier and had been fighting for VAD in NSW ever since.
Interviewing Shayne I quickly learned how little I knew about VAD legislation and advocacy. The ensuing article "Live and Let Die" was published by Green Left on 28 June 2021. I would write many more as the debate in NSW progressed. VAD for NSW finally passed into law in May 2022.
VAD is now legal everywhere in Australia except the Northern Territory where legislation is currently being drafted by the NT Government for debate in early 2026.
Thanks to the mentorship of my dear friend and President of DWD Victoria Jane Morris, and the support of people like DWDV board member Dr Nick Carr,NT VES President Judy Dent, and Ian Wood and Geoffrey Williams from Christians Supporting Choice for VAD, I am now a full time VAD advocate.
Green Left continues to staunchly support my VAD advocacy work.
